Order Paraplecoptera

(=Protorthoptera)

Early Carboniferous (Namurian) to Early Jurassic

Lemmatophora typica
Lemmatophora typica (From Tillyard 1928)

This primitive paraplecopteran (or protoperlarian) still has paranotal lobes on the prothorax.

This is the largest and most diverse order of Paleozoic insects.  There is still some dispute over whether or not the Paraplecoptera, Protorthoptera, Protoperlaria (family Lemmatophoridae), and Protoblattoidea constitute distinct orders or are all part of one large assemblage.
